“How do I blog?” is a question often asked by newcomers to Internet Marketing.  There is a lot of trepidation amongst newcomers about creating a blog, and then making it successful.  However, you do not need to be nervous about setting up your own blog, or indeed about blogging.

Your first task when considering a blog is to choose your topic.  Your blog will fair better if you try to choose a tight niche (called a micro niche), rather than making such a broad sweep across a topic that your readers find there is too much content for them to take it all in.

This broad sweep may also encourage you to write very non-specifically, where as a micro niche can enable you to tie down specific details in an area and provide unique quality content that is extremely valuable to your reader.

A blog should be updated with new and unique content on a regular basis.  You can choose how often that is, but to retain a regular readership your visitors should have some idea about how often you update.  One way to help your regular readers is to get them to sign up to your RSS feed, or even better to join your opt in list so you can advise them when you have released a new post.

Get to know your readers, find out what they need to know by activating your comments on posts and interact with these visitors.  This will enable you to write targeted posts, and promote targeted products.  Also sign up to forums in your niche and interact with other forum users.  Don’t forget to put your url in your signature so readers can link back to your blog.

Keep your blog posts on topic, and don’t make them too long.  If you need to write extensively about an area either break it down into a series of shorter posts, or create a report and link it to your opt in box so your readers can receive it free of charge for signing up to your list.

I enjoyed reading this even though I have been blogging for some time now. I think it is good to always reflect on the growth that you have achieved and to remind yourself of what you still need to work on.

Mandy, one of the points you make here really stands out to me. I see this mistake all too often with new bloggers.

They mistakenly think they are marketing to the entire world population rather than to a particular audience.

Your advice: “Your first task when considering a blog is to choose your topic. Your blog will fair better if you try to choose a tight niche (called a micro niche), rather than making such a broad sweep across a topic that your readers find there is too much content for them to take it all in.”

So many new bloggers just dive right in not knowing this important fact. I hope that your information gets out to those who need it. Sharing!

Hi Deborah, thanks for visiting. Thanks so much for sharing this page. I agree that often there is a much wider topic than needs be. I think we all try to cover everything in the beginning. And it is a mistake to do that for sure.

      Enjoy the journey!

Hi Mandy, appreciate the succinct post. I think alot is said about “finding a niche” across the blogging universe but little is said about maintaining sustainability. Blogging for blogging’s sake is not ideal and “looking for a niche” to blog about can get tiresome quickly if there is no business reason or personal passion driving the effort. I don’t mean to discourage anybody, but I personally think new entrants to the blogosphere really need to ask themselves “why” they want to get into it, before asking about the “how” !
