Is it not reasonable that we should all expect to have happiness in our lives? If you are not happy what can you do about it?
A good way to start is to make a list of all the things that make you happy. Even the smallest of things. How can you implement these into your life more regularly? What do you need to change to bring more happy things and less of the things that do not make you happy?
Maybe it is unrealistic to expect complete happiness all the time, but often a little change can make all the difference between feeling happy and content and the opposite feelings.
Happiness doesn’t always mean that everything is perfect, but it does mean that you have decided to look beyond those imperfections and get the best that you can out of your life. Happiness doesn’t come from without, it comes from within.
‘The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance, the wise grow it under their feet’.
James Oppenheim – American poet, novelist and editor, 1882-1932

Hi Mandy,
We’re as happy as we decide to be…Can’t remember the source of that quote but I’ve tried to remember it in times of woe.
Enjoyed your thoughts – as I usually do. Thanks,
Edward

Hm .. reading a lot about happiness today! I am basically happy .. over joyed? No, but happy.. I like what I do, love the internet life.. have grown to love certain people in my life just by being able to look beyond as you mention. And considering my eyesight – etc. Things could be a lot worse. So I am grateful.

Hi Lesly, thanks for visiting. You’ve made a very valuable point here about levels of happiness. Very interesting. Another question then could be how happy are you? I guess I spend my life being pretty much at the overjoyed level, but then I am a hedonist!

I would have to say, very happy with who I am.. so much growth through personal challenges. You have to have them. Challenges really show you what you can handle and how you do it. I think I’m pretty strong person and I like that about me. So, I’m happy how I have morphed through the years and still at it … LOL

Hi Mandy,
I really liked make a list of all the things that make you happy.
Great article for H !
I will write them in my journal tonight, after a lovely day with my family on Mothers Day. What a wonderful idea to do once a week and see if the list changes or grows.
Thanks for the idea.

Hi Mandy ,
Good Idea to make a list what makes happy 🙂
Counting our blessings can help as well .

Hi Erika, thanks for visiting. I made a friend an Easter Egg machine this year. Her first gift was a note pad and pen and every day for 14 days over Easter she popped a plastic egg out of the machine and each day there was a positive affirmation for the day and a request that she write in her book 5 things that made her happy. Of course I chose topics for that to give her a starter, like 5 foods you love to eat, 5 ways you like to relax, etc. It was a real hit! The great part about lists is you can look back on them and reflect!

Hi Mandy,
That’s a great article, and I can vouch for the truth of the Abraham Lincoln post.
After a spell of being pretty miserable earlier in the year I went out of my way to add to my life things that I enjoy doing, and – of course – I feel a whole lot happier.
My change of outlook was definitely a result of making conscious changes in my life.

Hi Joy, thanks for visiting. I have times when I’m not so happy, for sure. I usually find it’s to do with me rather than anything else and I can make it right again by spending time alone and contemplating. I always have come out the other side right as rain again. Adding things into your life that you enjoy is a great way out of any gloomy times. Well done!

What does happiness mean? For some it’s wealth but you can be rich and not happy so I don’t think that works, You can be rich with material possession and not happy with life, You can even have everything you have ever wanted including having the girl or guy you have ever wanted but will it make you happy? Probably not… In order to be happy you need to allow yourself to be happy inside… everything else is just a smoke screen of ‘let’s pretend’.
Happiness starts from within, If you are not happy how can you help others to be happy?

Hi Mandy,
Happiness is certainly something you create yourself… or don’t.
A twist on a Henry Ford quotation that I like to use goes like this… “Whether you think you’re happy, or not… you will be.” (The famous Ford quote uses the word “successful in place of “happy”).

Hi Mandy,
Happiness is definitely an inside job. For many years I have felt sad on certain holidays if I was alone. Sometimes Mother’s Day makes me feel sad because my mother is no longer here and I do not have children.
But this year I am finally putting together all the pieces of my online training with my professional background and I am so motivated to complete my Sexual Reawakening Summit that I just keep smiling. Doesn’t matter who is here or not here. I am grateful for my amazing health club and the fact that I could get my hair blown out today to be ready for more videos tomorrow. So far I have completed 18 video interviews and 4 audio interviews and I am blown away by the dedication of all these wonderful professionals.
Bottom line is that I feel so happy. And I would often feel unhappy about all sorts of other things because I didn’t feel as if I was creating what I knew was possible for me to create.
Warmly,
Dr. Erica

Hi Erica, thanks for visiting. I think those sadnesses are natural, we can’t go back to that happy place we had with those people who are no longer here, but we can be happy amongst that sadness in the wonderful memories with we made with them. Memories can make us a little sad.

Happiness…..I say like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz….there is no place like home. But many still fly here and there seeking to fill a void that can only be filled with contentment when you see who you are and why and develop the attitude of gratitude. Home is not always where our hearts rest. And it creates restlessness that drives us to many places, and it fails to leave us,until we find it within our own being, within our hearts.

Hi Mandy
Happiness is a choice which is based on perception. No matter the situation and circumstances, we decide what gives us joy and what doesn’t. You have revealed a cool tip for being happy.

One of the things that made me really happy recently was being able to be together with all three of my kids at the same time. The little things mean so much.
