Cleansing your personal space

I was recently asked how to clear a feeling of negativity in a place.  It’s always a great idea to ‘cleanse’ a new area you go into, but equally this technique works if you are wanting to cleanse an existing area that has become tainted with a negative energy.

For me cleansing is as much about routine as intent.  I have a routine of actions that I perform to cleanse an area.  In addition to this I will focus my intent on dispelling the negative energy and creating positive energy in its place.

The first step is to make sure your focus is on positive intent.  Clear your mind of the negative and work on creating a positive mind set for this task and afterwards.  Know that your actions and your intent combined will work to dispel the negative energy.

The actions I take whilst focusing on positive energy is to first clap, loudly, in each corner of the room, three times in each corner working from the top to the bottom of the corner.  Whilst doing this I ask that any negative energy in the room be dispersed and that positive energy be allowed to flow into the room.

The next step I take is to use a sage smudge stick.  You will need a bowl to hold the stick over while it is burning and water to extinguish the smudge stick after use.  It is important to remember to open windows and doors while you use the smudge stick.  Light your smudge stick and blow out the flame so the stick glows and smoke drifts from the tip.  Once your stick is smoking you walk around the room, wafting the smoke into the corners and around the perimeter of the room.  While you do this say an affirmation as you go.  Ask for the negative energy to be dispersed and that positive energy be allowed to enter the place.  Focus on bringing into the place things that are good for you and the people who enter and imagine the negative drifting out of the windows and doors with the smoke.

Don’t forget to extinguish your smudge stick when you have finished.

Enjoy the journey.

  1. Positivity matters a lot in our life and we should do our best to stay positive all the time. Sometimes, it is easier said than done because no matter how hard we try to stay positive, negative energy around us don’t allow us to stay positive, and in fact it tries to draw us towards negativity. What you have mentioned is new to me, but in our house, we believe in prayer and worship, and do it regularly. It helps a lot.

  2. Hi Mandy,
We often don’t think about our home housing negative energy,, but energy is energy and if you are tuned in to it, you can pick it up. I was told once to use organic sea salt in a small bowel and that could also cleanse.. have you heard of this?

    1. Hi Lesly, I never heard of this method, no, but I think I’ll give it a try! I use the smudging from time to time at home and also have used it in other places when I have been asked to. Thanks so much for visiting!

      Enjoy the journey!

  3. Because of how energy functions, we are all engaged in co-creation with the Life Force. I, too, smudge with sage. My energy and space clearing techniques include: first de-cluttering the space; cleansing yourself; and then the smudging practice.

  5. Hi Mandy,

Funny, I’d never heard of ‘smudging’ until a character used it in a book I finished this week. The book, “Somebody Tell Aunt Tillie She’s Dead”, was a fun bit of escapism that was a fast read.

And, reading the book probably made me appreciate this post more. Thanks,

you really did very well explain how to cleanse an area or a room.
I do it the same way. I like the smell of sage and smudging very much.
Thank you for writing about, maybe more people can use this ancient
and for many forgotten traditions again to cleanse their space. In Asia
Wild Rue and incense like Sandalwood is often used for this purpose.
    Thank you

    1. Hi Erika, thanks for visiting. I love sage too and smudging is part of my routine. Sometimes people are not aware of these old techniques so it’s great to write about them and bring it to people’s attention.

  9. I recently had a conversation surrounding around the intake of negative energy during the day and the need to release it before shifting focus. We discussed many idea such as ritual washing of hands, healing stones and Reiki.

    1. I recently read an article on sound as a cleanser too. I do clap in the corners of the room to dispel negative energy but others use methods such as bells and drums to dispel the energy.

      Thanks for visiting!

  10. Hi Mandy,

I enjoyed reading your post. I’ve heard of this but have never tried it or looked into anything about it.

It does make a lot of sense. I too believe that negative energy can be everywhere.

There are days that I just have feelings that something isn’t quite right but I can never pin-point what it is; very well could be a build up of negativity that I’ve let creep in at times.

Thank you and have a great evening.

    1. Hi Monna, thanks for visiting. You should try some sort of ritual when this happens, I love the smudging but there are other less time consuming ideas, like clapping in the corners of the room 3 times in a downward motion whilst asking the negative energy to leave the space and inviting positive energy in. Others use bells or drums for the same effect. Don’t sit around when things feel negative, get up and get rid of that energy!

      Enjoy the journey!

  11. Hi Mandy,

I read your full article and enjoyed this article. I agree with you that negative energy can be everywhere. But A Positive Energy Leads to Success and Happiness. A positive energy helps you cope more easily with the daily affairs of life.
