What Should I Blog About?

What should I blog about is a question I’m sure we have all asked ourselves from time to time.  Whether it is because you have no ideas for a blog post or you have no idea where your blog is going this question will seem like an insurmountable hurdle at times.

I never find myself short of ideas for blog posts.  I have always been a prolific writer but I am also very good at seeing ideas for posts in every day things.  I love symbolism!  I carry a dictaphone in my car door pocket to record those random ideas when they arise.

One of my previous posts talks about using lists to create a post.  You can read the post here: Stuck For A Blog Post Topic?  Make A List!  There are a whole host of other ways to start a post.  Topical news items can start you off.  Think about how you can use the topic in a message for your readers.  David Walker coined a phrase – ‘infotainment’ – he wrote posts using popular culture and symbolism to bring a message to his readers.  It is easy to think you have nothing to write about but ideas for posts are literally all around us.

The biggest trouble I have is deciding whether I have written almost the same post before!  When your blog gets old and there are many many posts on it you might need to do a bit of checking to be sure you haven’t said the same thing already!  For example, I know I have mentioned before about carrying a dictaphone in the car door pocket, but can’t for the life of me find the post it is written in!  So I apologise now if you have all read this before!

So, what should YOU blog about?  Make a list now of all the topics you could write a post about and when you are short of time or short of inspiration you can refer to the list.  When you are writing the list jot down any thoughts you have about the topics you include.  This is always a good starting point for writing a post.

Enjoy the journey!

    Hey Mandy,

This question can be really a pain in the head. Sometimes it’s hard to find an idea for the next blog post.

And even you try to start a blog. Most of the people get confused, because the presence of many niches.

The best thing is to check the old posts. It can give you some new ideas.

I’m like you Mandy, I rarely have a problem coming up with ideas to write about. I can relate to your point about keeping track of what you’ve written about, which is why I’ve always kept a spreadsheet listing every single post, the date they were published and under what category. It takes less than a minute to add the latest post to the spreadsheet, but it serves as a valuable quick reference for what I’ve written about and helps me to keep from getting stuck in a particular category.

    Hi Mandy,

Maybe it is because I do blog with my husband too and we are always talking shop, but there aren’t many times when I’m at a loss of what to write about.

The trick is to bring a little pad and pen along with me all the time in my purse. When we are out, we get ideas, and If I don’t write them down…I am then at a loss.

    Hi Mandy

Luckily I’m rarely at a loss for a blog post – and often even have them scheduled in advance. Ideas just seem to come to me. When they do, I either scribble them on a notepad, or just make a few notes direct into WordPress as a draft post.

I like the idea of keeping a spreadhsheet – because it would save searching old posts.

    Mandy,

With such an established blog as this, I’m sure it can be a challenge to decide what to write about each month.

I’m sure this is a topic most new bloggers never even think of. There are times all of us are just out of ideas.

I love the idea of dictating thoughts, ideas or blog post subjects. Especially in today’s world, most smartphones have a voice recorder so that’s perfect.

I am guilty of coming up with all these neat ideas and then not taking time to write them down!

Thanks Mandy, I haven’t read this topic from you before. 🙂

Lists are great! I have about 17 open drafts on my blog currently. I just create drafts with a title when I get the idea. Now the challenge I face is which one to focus on for the next post.

Writing is the easy part for me. I need to sequence the queue for a month so that I don’t have to think about which draft is going to be the post for the week.

The niche is critical as it will decide the success of blogs. When we consider about the niche, we should know about it well. Otherwise, we can’t write attractive articles.

The success of us comes from the readers of the blog. If you don’t know well about what you plan to write, you shouldn’t write. Instead, choose another topic.

Hi Mandy. Brainstorming is a useful activity. When I set up my new blog, I decided on five categories and then added sub-categories to each one. I set up a table in a WordPress document with the categories and subs, and then I put my ideas there.

I also use PLR in my niche. I rewrite the articles with my own personality. It is easier to come up with a blog post if I have something to hang it on.

You have a great site here, and I saw your opting has John Thornhill’s picture on it. I have a number of his products and think he is one of the most honest gurus out there, except maybe he’s not a guru because he doesn’t charge $2,500 for one course. 🙂

Choosing the topics to write is somewhat a tedious task but it can be avoided if we take part in a community like Bizsugar, Inbound.org, Growth hackers etc as we can get the tons of ideas from others’ content.

Anyway, I would like to craft the posts for my audience requirement so that they will be loyal for sure. Writing inessential things should be avoided and it would be better to stay focused.

I get the topic ideas while doing the keyword research. Thanks for initiating the good discussion, good to read other comments.
