Inspiring people

A good lot of the time we go through life almost not noticing the things that are going on around us.  But every now and again something floats along in front of us and we grab it with both hands and think ‘wow!  I want to know more about that!’

This weekend we are off to Scotland.  Our friends are both 50 and they are holding a joint party on Saturday night.  One of the pair has been in training for a couple of years for a challenging 10 mile swim from Ailsa Craig to Girvan.  Her swim takes place on Saturday afternoon and part of the plan for the weekend is to join the party that greets her on her arrival in Girvan.

Although I have been aware of the swim, the fund raising, the challenge, for the last two years I didn’t really know anything about it.  I mentioned it to someone yesterday and they said ‘what is Ailsa Craig?’  I didn’t know so thought I’d look it up on the internet.  During my search up popped a blog my friend has been keeping of her progress during training.  I was fascinated to read her journal, and it is so well written and so amusing in places I thought I would share the link with you all.  Take a look, and especially read the post that confirms that ‘chocolate makes you float’!

What a way to celebrate your 50th birthday!

Enjoy the journey.

  1. Hi Mandy
I wish Ros every success with the swim. From someone who swims like a brick, I hope the water is calm and not too cold.
    Cheers

Hi Steve, thanks, and I’ll be there at the end, cheering her on. (And at the party afterwards!)

  4. Have a great holiday in Scotland Mandy, keep us updated on how Ros gets on with her swim….It’s a wonderful skill to have. I tried some lessons this year to learn how to crawl properly, but gave up after a few goes.
    John

Hi John, I know, swimming isn’t for everyone. Personally I can’t stand swimming. Anyway, foul weather in the Irish sea meant the swim had to be postponed, but they are hoping for a better day sometime this week. Will let you know – watch this space!

    Enjoy the journey.

  5. Hi Mandy
I am glad to see that 50 is regarded as middle age, this is comforting information. Your friends blog looks very interesting and I will revisit it. I also love chocolate especially dark 70% but can’t say if it helps me float or not, sadly I swim like a stone.
Hope you have a lovely weekend
    Best wishes
    Ann

Hi Ann, I certainly had a great weekend, although the swim didn’t happen due to foul weather in the Irish sea, but it will happen, possibly one day this week. Thanks for visiting.

    Enjoy the journey.

  7. Hi Mandy,

I hope you had a wonderful time in Scotland (one of my favorite areas to visit on your beautiful island) :-)

Hope the swim went well … I am wondering how cold/warm the water might have been :-)

    A 50th birthday celebration with a bang!
    Svenja

    Hi Svenja,

The swim hasn’t happened yet. Sadly the poor weather in the Irish sea meant it could not go ahead, and the weather there has been poor all week, so no luck yet. Scotland was wonderful, however, and so was the party!

    Enjoy the journey.

  8. Hi Mandy, glad the party went well.

Shame the weather put a stop to the swim, ros must’ve been very dissapointed after all the training and building herself up for it.

    Better luck next time

Hi Barry, brilliant party, thanks, and yes, a real shame about the swim. But she’s ready – shame she has missed the best weekend for it, in terms of good tides apparently.

    Enjoy the journey.
