I’m An Alpaca Trekker!

Alpaca Trekking at Wells-next-the-Sea

Costello

What a great summer I am having.  If you’ve all been wondering where I have been then this post will let you know!  I managed to get a new job for the season – walking Alpacas along the coastal path between Wells-next-the-Sea and Stiffkey.  It has been a really great experience so far and I look forward to many more treks before the season ends.

Sadly not many people book treks during the winter months.  I’m not too sure why, except for the weather factor of course.  One would assume people still walk during the winter – indeed there are plenty of people out on the beaches when I take my dog out over the winter months, and not all have dogs to walk.  So I wonder why they don’t enjoy the experience of trekking with the Alpacas while they are walking.

The man I work for has six Alpacas, two groups of three.  You can see all the guys (they are all boys) here: Alapaca Trekking.  Above is a photo of Costello, the leader of the second group.  They are about two and a half years old now and came a year after the first group, who are about three and a half.

I couldn’t believe my luck when I got this job.  I have really missed working with animals since the horse project finished.  These guys are a great step in the right direction for me.  I get fresh air and exercise and they are so lovely to be with.

If you are in North Norfolk anytime book a trek.  I’ll see you there!

  1. Hi Mandy

What a great job to have over the summer – fresh air, fitness and get paid for walking in beautiful scenery with your young men! I expect you are getting to know them as individuals now – animals are such an important part of our lives.

This is an excellent way to have a way of building up time for yourself whilst doing a job. I’m a real believer in taking time out – thanks for the opportunity you gave us to do that too.

Hope the rain wasn’t too bad for you today.

    Hilary

  2. Yep, perfect job for me, Hilary. And so glad you enjoyed your stay, it really is a beautiful part of the country and great for relaxing in. Thanks for visiting.

    Enjoy the journey.

  3. This sounds so much like you. I am not an animal person but I have been around them all my adult life because of others that love them.

Hope your weather in UK isn’t as bad as ours. The record of days over 100 degrees for Oklahoma is 50. We are at 48 so there is little doubt that we ill hit it.

  4. Hi Carol, thanks for visiting. Yes, I do love being around animals and the Alpacas are great fun. We have had quite a splendid summer for a change. A bit changeable at times but mostly great holiday weather. Yours sounds dreadful! Bless you.

    Enjoy the journey.

  5. What a great job Mandy, walking and getting paid for it. Looking at the map I make the distance between Wells-next-the-sea and Stiffkey about 5-6 miles which would be around a 2 hour walk.

As for the winter walking, yes you are correct people have the impression that it’s constantly raining. Well I walked every day from 2nd January to mid April and was only rained on 4 times, so that concept is misleading. In fact it’s rained more days in the summer.

I notice on the website that you have machu and picchu, that’s one place I hope to visit before too long. Are you still involved in your antique business?

    Bill

  6. Hi Bill, thanks for visiting. I’m very interested in your figures here because I wondered how far we walk so I looked it up on the internet. It said an adult walks around 4 miles an hour, which means we walk 8 miles on our two hour treks and four miles on the one hour treks, but I didn’t think it was that far. I reckon your 2-3 miles per hour is much more realistic. And yes, I do still have two shops…multi tasking at the moment to make up the slack from the shops being poor these past couple of years…I’ve just come across another money earner too – it’s called ‘bed and fed’ and I just signed up so will see how that goes.

    Enjoy the journey.

  7. Mandy, if you are young and superbly fit you might manage 4 miles per hour but for most people 21/2 to 3 mph is the norm on flat ground.

    Bill

  8. Wow – I am jealous ! What a fun job – have a great time.

    Mary

  9. Hmmm, just as I suspected, Bill, thanks.

    Enjoy the journey.

    Mandy

  10. Yes, Mary, I couldn’t believe my luck. There was a note in the local shop saying ‘summer job working with animals (not dogs)’ so I thought it might be feeding people’s cats while they’re away or something. Couldn’t believe my luck when I found out what it was!

    Thanks for visiting.

    Enjoy the journey.

  11. Love love love that you shared this Mandy :-)

I am a huge animal fan… or I used to be (no I still am), I don’t spend much time with animals these days though. Oh, I walk my dog, but I really miss horseback riding. It’s been years since my last trip to the woods on a horse.

I really admire you taking the time to live out this dream Mandy.

    Well done :-)

I am living out another dream right now… I finally live and breath online marketing and business building on an everyday basis in my job, but I am also very close to launcing my own business, that is set up for a 6 figure launch this year :-)

I am happy to follow your posts so I can keep an eye on you :-)

    Lots of love

  12. What a great job Mandy – congratulations. It certainly beats sitting in front of a computer screen, tapping away at a keyboard. Thanks for reminding me that there is a real world all around us, the only time I see it is when I go for a run or cycle ride.

  13. Hi Maryleena, thanks for visiting and it is nice to see you here. Wow, you are coming on nicely. Great to hear about your business ventures. Good luck with it all. My next challenge is to get a video of the boys on here…going to try this week sometime. They are rather splendid.

    Enjoy the journey.

  14. Hi John, long time no speak, hope you are well. I’ve been really busy this summer and had less time online, most of it has been taken up with a new product I’m working on that involves video tutorials, so I haven’t bogged hopped for a bit. I’ll have to get over to your blog and see what’s happening there!

    Enjoy the journey.

    Mandy

  15. Sounds like a really fun job actually! Alpacas are so cute! If I lived there, I would book a trek with you in a jiffy!

  17. They look really nice. I was wondering if they are easier to control. They seem to be quite full of character

  18. They are extremely full of character, but are very easy to handle. Alpacas are really calm animals.

  21. Hi Mandy,

Is This animal called a lama? Anyway I am so happy the what you do makes you happy. Not that many people can say that.

Some people work in a rat race where they must do what they don’t like to get by. Life is a chore for them.

As they say if you enjoy your work, you don’t feel like you’re working.

    Keep on keeping on Mandy,

  22. Hi Mandy,

It sounds like fun to me! I think people prefer the beach because it is more convenient for them. Anyway, that summer job is awesome because it doesn’t look like a job at all. Enjoy! :)

  23. You do make me laugh, Terry…the clue is in the title ‘I’m an Alapca Trekker’. Llamas are much bigger and are used as pack animals in South America. These guys, Alpacas, are smaller and bred purely for their fine coats. Here in the UK they are used mostly for showing, although some large breeders do sell their wool. My boss uses these six for trekking, two ‘herds’ of thee, although we do take all six out from time to time, but in the main they are worked in two threes. Watch the next post, Terry, there’s a video of them all.

    Enjoy the journey.

  24. You are so right, Cass. Not like work at all!

    Enjoy the journey.

  25. How fun Mandy! I’ve never heard of walking an Alpaca.
    Pepe is a little cutie!

  26. Hi Peggy, thanks for visiting. I don’t suppose many people run Alpaca Trekking businesses but we have a lot of eager participants so maybe it’s an idea for anyone wanting a lovely occupation. These guys are really hardy, don’t cost anything to feed as they eat all natural growth and are great companions too. I can’t imagine why more people aren’t running their own Alpaca Trekking operations!

    Enjoy the journey.

    Mandy

  27. Sounds like a very fun job! That furry friend of yours looks so cute!

  28. These guys are amazing. Hope you watched the video on the next post!

    Enjoy the journey.

  29. Costello is adorable. You must’ve enjoyed your job Mandy. You just gave me an idea of walking with alpaca rather than walking with dogs :) Brilliant! More power on you career!

  30. Hi Mandy,
