How do you relax?
Whenever I am away on a conference or workshop weekend I run a short meditation/relaxation session before dinner on the first night for anyone who wants to join in. I always start these sessions by asking everyone in the group how they relax when they get the chance. There are usually a wide variety of answers ranging from the simple things in life, like having a gin and tonic whilst in a hot bath (a professor once said that one!) to more energetic ways to relax such as taking up a hobby.
Living near the coast one of my greatest ways to relax is to sit somewhere I can see the sea, smell the salt on the air, feel the sand under my feet. It’s so peaceful just sitting quietly, listening to the waves washing onto the beach.
Another way I relax is here on the internet. I sometimes play a game (Farmville is my favourite! Sad, I know but Tracey Peapell plays too so it’s not just me!), I visit interesting blogs and enjoy reading the variety of entries (check out the blog rolls alongside here for other interesting blogs to visit), and I maintain this blog, and one or two others.
I am currently undertaking a ’100 blog comments challenge’ during August that was the brainchild of Steve King and Jacinta Dean. You can check out the list of other contributors on the dedicated page listed in the sidebar. The purpose of the challenge is for any participant to publish one post in the month of August and try to achieve 100 comments on that one post. Everyone visiting is also encouraged to socially bookmark the post after leaving their comment. This is my challenge post.
So to help me reach my target leave me a comment and tell me, how do you relax?

When I am writing for a client, I need to take mini breaks just to get my head cleared, so I play quick computer games or go outside and mess around in my garden for a few minutes.
When I am having one of those days when nothing goes right and I am lucky if I remember the alphabet, I turn my computer off and think about other things. Actually I am hoping the vampire bats that live in my computer will do something constructive for a change while I am gone. Most of the time they do not.
At times I visualize something pretty, like flowers in bloom, ocean scenes or baby wild animals. If I am so stressed that I cannot easily visualize something positive, I watch slide shows of my digital photographs.
I think and dream visually, so I am easily relaxed by pretty sights of nature. When all else fails, I feed the wild birds who tap on my windows when the food supply is skimpy.
Not going to discuss the ice cream in the freezer or the cookies in the cupboard. A girl needs some secrets, don’t you think?

Hi Mandy, there are many ways I can relax, I try to get in some walking at weekends, I love the country and love just to lie in fields under the hot sun (a bit of a novelty in the UK).
I also work out of a variety of offices I think some people call them public houses, where I can take a pad and a pen and just write away in complete relaxation. I find that I am more productive away from all the distractions of home although I sometimes have difficulty reading what I have written!
If I have had a very stressful day I listen to a relaxation CD by Paul McKenna, I always feel fully recharged after that!

Hi Mandy,
I have been big on meditation in my life…and, it is a wonderful way to take your mind off of all the tasks that life throws at you…
I too live near the sea and agree that the sound of the ocean is about as soothing as it gets.
But, I’ll tell you what Mandy…there is nothing like a nice long walk in nature that will put my head and my priorities in place…I am always totally relaxed when I return home…
Good luck with the 100 comments…I’ll be participating too

Hi Mandy, look at me leaving a comment the same day you’ve posted, is this a first?
How do i relax? To be honest i find relaxing quite difficult at the moment due to the pain i’m constantly in. I’m hoping that in a few weeks time the surgeon will wave his magic knife and give me back a pain free life, which would allow me to relax again, amongst many other things.
Prior to the pain i would relax by taking my dog for a run, reading a good novel, an occasional visit to the pub or watching a movie. However when watching a movie i tend to get out of my w/chair so as to make the most of relaxing but always seem to fall asleep within minutes of the movie starting, much to wifes disapproval. The good thing about it though is that i need to watch the movie 4 or 5 times to get the complete story. I have, on many occasion, fell asleep at the start of one movie and woke up to the ending of another, talk about confusing…..
Best of luck with the challenge Mandy, I’m also up for it.

Hi Mandy,
Over the years I have used many different methods to relax. Growing up, in school, i used to stare out the window at the sky, or maybe some leaves. People call that daydreaming, but to me the feeling compared to what I got later in life using Transcendental Meditation. Exercise always relieves any built up stress I may have. Thanks for the post, have a Great Day!

Hi Mandy, Thanks for helping to drive the 100 Posts challenge. You are a great example to us all.
My way of relaxing is to read a book. Not just any book, but a book to suit the mood that I am in. So at any one time I have 4 or 5 books on the go. How wacky is that? I can stop one book and take up another where I left off. Now how really wacky is that?
Yours in total confusion,
Brian.

I know nothing about Farmville, other than I make money by promoting products about it…doh, I really must stop doing that.
Anyway, I relax by playing imaginary golf shots in my head. I’ve played all the best courses ‘in my head’…had some low scores too
And right now I like hitting my new 3-iron, it’s shiny and new and goes a mile

Hi Mandy,
Of course I have to respond to this. There is so much going on in my life, trying to keep up with everything is a full time job. You’d think that now that I’m retired I would have all sorts of time on my hands. Well It is just not so.
The good thing is that I realize that it is important to take the time to chill out and relax. Here are some of the things I do to relax:
1. Even when I am at home, I take a time out from whatever I’m doing turn off the TV and radio, sit down, close my eyes and think about all the good things that are happening in my life. Sort of a positive enforcement of how I am leading my life. It’s also a type of meditation.
2. Vacations are great at times too. But some are not very relaxing, so you really have to plan some time, even on vacation to relax some.
3. I play my guitar and sing along even when I am at home. But I do try to get over to see my barber (he plays banjo) and we jam a bit. Sometimes others join us. Lot’s of fun and VERY enjoyable.
4. I take time to thank God in prayer for all the things in my life he has provided for me. Prayer to me is the most relaxing time.
Thanks for asking…and I hope you get your 100 comments.

Hi Mandy,
This is a great post and the subject is one we should all ask ourselves. We all should make sure we relax as often as possible, after taking care of the necessities of life!
One of my favorite ways to relax has been to go to the park and throw a ball or Frisbee with my dogs (German Shepherds). It’s good exercise, but I love watching them having fun and we get to spend quality time together.
This is only one of the ways I like to relax, but it has always been enjoyable! Good luck on your 100 comment challenge and I am always happy to comment on your posts!

Hey Mandy,
I tend to just chill with a movie, and as I watch I find strangely enough that whatever task I am winding down from, kind of just sinks in nicely as an achievement!
I think its the only way I know besides a good old soak in the tub.

Relaxing takes many forms for me – I am a rather driven person so I need lots of moments of relaxation.
To relax the muscles in my body involves yoga, stretching, walking, and massage. I am very poor in this area
To relax my mind – well I love the beach and watching water move, meditation, and reading a good book that just envelopes me. I usually have to do something physical to slow my mind.
Love a hot bath….or a cup a tea….and I can not discount deep breathing and cleansing breaths…
Oh this was fun and I can feel myself relaxing already..

HI Mandy,
Here’s what I do:
Find a place where I can be alone for at least 1 hour
A place where I can seat and will not meet anyone I know
I just seat there and let my thought fly…
Each time when work issues and problem appear in my mind, I tell myself to let it go and that it will be resolved inevitably.
I will reach a point when the space between each of my thoughts expand, like the space between songs in an CD album I listen.
As times goes by, that space will expand…until I am simply there.
I tell myself..Reeeeeelax……
I used to do this 3 times per week. I now do it occasionally
Your post made me decide that I am going to do this everyday for the next whole month.
Thanks
Cheers

Hi Stan, thanks for visiting. I did try the gym, perservered for a few months but it really didn’t ‘do it’ for me. It was just a chore and I did not really enjoy it. Hi Mandy,
My way to relax is through good old reading. It can be a book or browsing the net, but invariably anything related to history (I’m that boring, lol!).
Even though that’s the way to stop my mind machine toward a good night sleep, there are many days I just don’t get a chance or will to do it… I need a better approach to my regular (mind draining) job.

Hi Mandy
Great post. With the world going at such a fast pace these days, it is good to see that people are still taking the time to relax.
Over the years your ideas on relaxing change. When I was young, every Sunday I used to go to the beach early in the morning until about 11am (too hot after that in the Australian sun)and just lie there and read the Sunday papers. Nobody would be there when it was early so I had the whole beach to myself. The warm sun, sound of the birds and the ripple of the wave – so relaxing. When I got older I use to love going to the garden nurseries and walking through the big palms and hanging fern area and also walking through the Australian bush can be very relaxing. Things have now changed I still enjoy going for a walk (no beach or bush were we live now) especially after dinner on a warm balmy night. Most of the time though it is a glass a wine with the ‘other half’ watching a good English murder mystery and hoping I don’t go to sleep before I find out who the murder was.
Take care.
Robyn
Hi Mandy,
Relax…I have heard of the word but never get the chance to experience it lol.
Seriously though, Myself & the family go to the local beach with the dog and just stroll for an hour, then a bag of chips to walk back to the car – bliss!
If we have a day to spend together we elaborate on the above by having a run out to Whitby or Scarborough to unwind and get some real fresh air. I was brought up in Whitby as a child and still have many friends there so it is always a pleasure to go and visit.
Apart from this my only other relaxation is the same as Randy, A night in front of the 50″ plasma with a pint and a parmo
(A parmo is a local dish of chicken or pork fillet coated in breadcrumbs and covered with a layer of melted cheese topped off with parmasan cheese..really nice and very filling)
A great post with some very interesting replies

Hey Mandy,
I relax often by listening to music I find it really a great way to just let the mind wonder off in its own world. Really I find it hard to relax often because I am always thinking about something, new ideas flowing into my ideas or I just want to finish something. I guess one way that I do get to release some of that stress or my time is when I do fitness by going to the gym just makes me feel so good and fresh the next day.

Like you, my preferred way to relax would be at the beach, but since I don’t live at the beach, I sit on my back porch instead and watch the birds at my feeder. Hi Mandy,
I find that knowing how to relax is very important to high productivity while working.
It’s so easy to work at the expense of the time that should be devoted to relaxation.
There are two general ways for me to relax. One is mildly active one and the other is very active.
Under the mildly active I include going for a walk, Playing the guitar and sometimes singing along with it, going for a swim in the ocean, reading a book while on the beach.
Under the very active I include a game of tennis, a whole day hike or going on a long at least half a day bicycle ride.
It depends on how much time I have, what’s the weather and how I feel at the time what kind of relaxing I do.
There is a third way to relax which has some value and that is to do nothing just breathe deeply for half an hour. I employ that one on occasion when I’m just too exhausted to do anything else.

One of my past bosses suggested ‘to sit on a rock’ or ‘stop and smell the roses’. Our lives are filled with many activities and is very fast paced. It is good to be reminded to take time out to relax.

Hi Mandy!
How do I relax? Actually did it today. Booked myself a back neck and shoulders deep tissue aromatherapy massage. Absolutely murderous given how tight my muscles have become lately but when it stopped OMG did I feel brilliant! Like a new woman!
Day to day relaxation is giving myself permission to actually play with the kids. Playing with Lego, football, doing puzzles and seeing who can build the biggest pile of bubbles in the bath! Kids can be such stress that sometimes it’s easy to forget what fun, pleasure and blessing they are!
Great post! Cheers

Hi Mandy,
I’ve had a lot of difficulty relaxing just lately. There is just a heck of a lot of stress going on in my life right now which makes relaxation quite difficult.
I find a period of deep intakes of breath which I then slowly exhale can be very useful to relax me particularly when lying awake at night.
One of my best relaxations is taking my dog for a walk and watching her run with natural joy of life can be uplifting too though trying to stop her chasing hares can be totally negative so in the main relaxation is dozing in front of the box after a great home cooked meal and the kids are in bed is close to heaven!
Food for thought though. Massage seems a popular relaxation maybe I should ask my daughter for a Hot Stone Aromatherapy Massage as she is an excellent Masseuse!
cheers

Hi Mandy.
Blog hopping like we are doing now (100 comment challenge, brilliant idea).
My main way to relax is to surf.
I was born and brought up in Cornwall, UK. 5 minutes from the sea. So surfing for me has always been part of my life.
I just love it out on the back row, waiting for the next set to come in, thinking, relaxing and generally enjoying myself.

Hi Mandy
Let me tell you what I was doing as I was writing a reply to your comment on my post….”RELAXING!!”…..I was listening to HOPES & FEARS by one of my all time favorite bands…KEANE…This is something I haven`t done for quite a while, it`s been all work and sleep amongst other family stuff, I have hardly had time to breath in recent months…Needless to say, music is my passion and it is about the only real way I find to relax, it opens the mind sends me into a totally different train of thought…CHILLED!!!
A Great Challenge “sticky” Post…You`re certainly on course and its still early days..
GOOD LUCK!!!
MIKE
Hi Mandy great post, and on a subject so important to everyone,
how do I relax? I submit to the rough and tumble demands of my two youngest children, a girl of five and a boy of 2 1/2, plus my grandson who is 1 1/2 and my granddaughter who is 3, because of long work hours and time spent working on my business I feel we never get enough time together (something which is high on my list of priorities to change through my business).
So when I can, I come down to their level and act like a big kid, they jump on me, try to fight with me, try to make me up with their play makeup (the girls that is) we roll play, I usually end up quite exhausted after an hour with them.
When I wont put my laptop down, my daughter gets her toy laptop out, and sits next to me mimicking me!, its funny, then my boy starts creeping round the table, popping his head up and pulling faces at me… they have me in stitches… and then sometimes they just gang up on me until I give in and put the laptop away for an hour,
They are a welcome distraction and a frequent reminder of that old saying ‘all work and no play makes jack a dull boy’ they enrich my life, are a constant reminder of just why I am doing this… and keep me sane with all their crazyness! and then when we are all worn out we will cuddle up on the sofa, watch some winnie the poo, spongebob or mickey mouse and just chill… they relax me by wearing me out until I have no choice but to relax!.
I see you are not far off from hitting the 100 comments mark already!, nice one!
Best Wishes
Pete Chapman
Hey Mandy,
I don`t tend to relax as much as I should really, but when I do it tends to be a movie or internet browsing just for fun I tend to visit ‘You Tube’ a lot, heck i`ve even found myself on it for hours, just watching all the amazing content on there.
Honestly you learn alot of things has far as ‘how to`s’ go, and you don`t even know how much you`re learning?
Anyway other than that, I don`t really get up to much relaxing.
Post has posed a good question, thanks for that Mandy….Ed.
Hi Pete, are you joining in the challenge? It’s open to anyone, just leave me the details of the post you would like to enter and I’ll add it to the list and so will all the others in the challenge!

Hi Pete, thanks for visiting. I love the relaxing time with young children, I’m glad you get so much enjoyment out of your time with them. They always do such funny things, and Winnie the Pooh sounds like a great way to wind down with them. I still have my 1960′ Winnie the Pooh LP and used to play it for my nieces and nephews when they came to stay. Now they have children of their own and I play it for the next generation!

I just read another blog about this comment challenge. It sounds really interesting and looks like you are getting closer to hitting your goal:) Great post on relaxation. I think this is such an important topic and we all should know exactly what we can do to relax and what works best for us. The key for me is to continually just take what I call “silent time outs” throughout the day. For me, it is about never letting myself stray too far and get too caught up in the hustle and bustle of life.

Yes I must say that I do have a great affinity to the Sea and the powers of relaxation it offers up, viewing it not sailing or swimming it
I have also always been an avid Golf fan, while a lot of people who probably haven’t tried it relate to it as a way to spoil a good walk, I absolutely love it.
Weight training is also I find an excellent way of getting an immediate release from the mental stresses and strains.
I guess that it is everybody to their own as it were, life would be boring if we were all the same. The most important thing I believe is that you do take time out in doing something, whatever floats your boat as it were.
Kindest Regards,

Hi Mandy, What a super post! It’s great to hear the many ways that everyone finds a little peace in the work-a-day world. I feel like I know everyone much better than before. Music has always worked for me. If I’m after deep relaxation then listening to composers from the renaissance to modern film scores takes me away, especially, Ralph Vaughn Williams, Edward Elgar, and Jean Sibelius to name a few. Hi Mandy!
One of my new favorite ways to relax is to sit out in my flower garden. It has a little stone path running through it, so I’ll just sit down on one of the stones and either watch the flowers and the insects that are on and around them, or I’ll close my eyes and do a little meditation and connect with myself and the garden around me.
I just started doing this the other day and am LOVING it!

Hi Mindy,
I like your ways of relaxing. As an adolscent, I would go and sit near the sea and relax, or lie down in a dark room listening to music.
Today I use the modern way of relaxing, which seems to fit the modern/nervous lifestyle: surfing the net, or playing (I am addicted to the simple games, as minesweeper or spider solitair, and bubbles).

Hi Mandy,
Congratulations on reaching your goal! I don’t think I could handle 100 comments..I love that I *know* my readers…whew…godo for you!
I relax in various ways..living on a boat makes that easy for me to do..sometimes just sitting in the cockpit letting the sunshine warm my skin or the moonbeams light my area…I also enjoy hiking and being in nature. I love to read, write, cook, swim, walk or run on the beach, kayak, sail…I like to just ‘be’…let my space be clean and clutter free and let my heart whispers swirl around it…
Hi Joy, actually I haven’t reached the target, half of the comments are my reply and the idea is to get 100 unique visitors. I have really enjoyed meeting new bloggers through the challenge, I do know my commenters personally as I have built a relationship up with them over time. It’s great, isn’t it. Hi Mandy
I have found that one of the best stress busters for me is to go to the cinema with my children.
No phone, Internet or any technology to remind you of the outside world. And you can lose yourself in whatever emotional journey the film takes you on.
I have even found myself crying in the cinema as all the stress releases, of course I am a bloke so its probably because I had a bad cold!

I have relaxation down to a science *grin* I start every morning with an outdoor hot tub. I drink my espresso, then meditate until the hot tub stops bubbling. I end every night with a hot tub and quiet conversation with Mr Very Right.

Then there is gardening … reading … amateur photography … and, of course, writing for and coordinating writers for my online magazine.

Hi Mandy,
You asked how people like to relax.
Well I, like yourself, find the sight and sound of water very calming. Sitting on the bank of a gently flowing stream. Hearing the soft, relaxing, sound of the water flowing past my bare feet as it ripples over some half-submerged pebbles. The warm sun shining down through a gentle breeze. The soft humming of bees among the nearby wild flowers whose delicate fragrance fills the air. Hearing the soft chirps of some baby birds high in a nest in the old weather beaten tree to the left of me as their parents fly back and forth with insects in their beaks to lovingly feed them. The occasional soft splash as the fish, full of energy, swim excitedly around in the stream enjoying the sunshine. The gentle bleat of young lambs in the nearby field. The day so relaxed. My mind calming in an environment so peaceful and tranquil yet so filled with life.
Heaven!

Relax – what’s that! lol
Sometimes I think it’s impossible!
I do relate to the bit about when one retires there’s even less time to do everything – but my angle is the once the youngsters have “left home” they want so much more doing for them that you are running round them more that when they were toddlers. lol
Still – my relaxation – like some others – walking the dogs, listening to music and doing jigsaw puzzles – you just can’t hurry them!
All the best

I’ve just discovered that I love being outdoors and walking (and have even tried running) as a way to relax. Who would have thought that? I’m not a big fan of exercise! I think it has to do with my being in NYC all day long – its crowded, dirty, hot, smelly – and when I get to walk in mostly fresh air among trees in NJ its so refreshing and different. I also relax by working in the park

Hi Mandy
As both my wife and I work (separately) from home we’re rubbish at relaxing as one of us always has some job to complete. And if Barb is working at something I’ll settle down and do a bit more work as well.
To counteract this we take regular (every 4-6 weeks) mini breaks of 2 – 3 days where we go away and don’t take computers and use our mobile phones only for personal. Maximum driving time is 2.5 hours to make the most of our time.
This helps us maintain our sanity and works like a mini honeymoon again and again.
Only a few weeks till we’re off to Brighton – Yippee!
Best regards
Doug
Mandy:
This is a great topic of discussion.
It is hard to relax around my house with to young kids that keep us running.
As I thought about how I relax, unfortunately it took me a while to come up with something.
I typically can relax while I am reading the Bible or doing some kind of Bible study. I sometimes can relax while playing some video games. Some games can get me worked up. I sometimes relax while working out. I sometimes relax while sitting in bed with my wife and just chat about different things (this is after the kids have gone to bed of course).
I was really interested in reading how other relax.
Thanks for starting this discussion.

Delicious question, Mandy! I must agree with your seaside answer. A few months ago I was living in Playa del Carmen, Mexico and I loved visiting the ocean daily. Just walking ankle deep into those gorgeous blue waters felt like a powerful healing.
Now that I’m in the UK for a few months I’ve got other relaxation techniques to fall back on.
1) Laughter & Silliness – I have to do this daily. I let my body, mind, words, actions, etc. just stretch out. Dancing like a maniac to my favorite songs and playing with my husband are frequent
2) Meditation & Being Present – Either just really tuning into the moment or closing my eyes for a half hour of focusing inward. Both transform me into a different person. Relaxed, peaceful, centered, happy for no reason…
Thanks for broaching this question. I think we can all use more time for true relaxation.
Peace,
Lauren

Relaxation doesn’t come easy to some people, but it is an art you can learn. I am a Reiki practioner (what is Reike http://www.reikiassociation.org.uk/3.html) so I give myself a session of Reike which is the most relaxing thing I know. Twenty minutes later and all is peaceful. As I live in the country in a very isolated village I can just go into the garden and listen to the birds and the trees – so peaceful you can’t help but relax.

Sometimes I close the book and think deeply with the same cup of tea.
Other times I will go for a walk. Or I will listen to my favorite music. But I do it alone when I can connect myself spiritually that calms me down.
I want to know your comment, How is my way of relaxing right or not right. Talk soon

Hi Mandy

Hi Mandy
For me, relax means staying in the beach looking at the sea and trying to empty my brain of everyday issues. I also live near the ocean and every time is possible I go there and stay just watching the waves, the boats and the seagulls. During my holidays I go every day, near sunset, for a walk with my wife and that is an hour of pure joy and relax.
I think I could afford to live away from the sea, I miss it when I’m too long away from it. Although I’m not a great swimmer, I don’t sail or surf, and seldom do some fishing, just starting at the sea is the perfect cure for anxiety. Like my wife says “it washes the soul”.
Cheers

Hi Mandy,
Thanks for stopping by to leave a comment for the 100 Comment Challenge. I have enjoyed reading your post on ways to relax. This is a great question especially as we run around in our demanding world. I meditate and have always found it very soothing … especially when I am feeling agitated or overwhelmed. Music helps too. Hi Vivien, thanks for visiting. Oh, playing the piano, I do admire you! I had a few lessons a couple of years ago, but found I did not have the time to practice, sadly. I may save that one for a quieter time. I did really enjoy it though and yes, it is very relaxing.

Hi Fran, thanks for visiting. Well, there is no right or wrong way, we each find our own peace in different things, but there does seem to be a lot of common themes running through the list built up here and certainly reading, sitting quietly, music and walking are placed very high up that list. Thanks for sharing. The key is to find your own personal relaxation activities and make time for them so you don’t burn out.

Hi Mandy,
I am lucky enough to live by the sea and there is nothing better that going for nice walks along the coast, breathing in the lovely sea air and listening to the waves crashing against the rocks.
I find this makes for perfect relaxation.
As Jorge says in a previous comment “the sea does wash the soul”.
Thanks for sharing these thoughts Mandy.

Hi Mandy
One of my favourite ways to relax is watching a comedy movie or show or a cartoon … for like 15-20 mins … have a nice laugh and back to work.
One of the other things we (my wife & me) do to relax is go for long walks alongside the lake which is at around 10 mins derive from our home. The fresh air, the sound of birds, the quietness, the noise of leaves, its just very soothing.
Your lucky to be living by the sea side … I’d love to have a house by the sea side
sometime in the future.
Cheers!

Hi Mandy,
I agree with your choice of looking out on the ocean – it just takes you to another, more peaceful place almost instantly. Perhaps it’s the perspective we gain when gazing on the vastness before us – like looking at the stars on a cloudless night.
But for me, my heart, my place of peace is the high mountain desert of Santa Fe,New Mexico. It is my home and I long to return there and live beneath those endless blue skies, bright desert sun and a zillion stars.
So to relax – I (being the most excellent day-dreamer that I am)simply imagine being there.
Enjoy your ocean.

Relaxation is so awfully important. With stress all over, learning to rest is imperative.
I work very hard at work, working on time management to work as effectively as possible. When I get home I spend time with my family, take a walk, watch TV or work out (or eat!).
Just not thinking about work is the best relaxation in my book.

I have just started learning Yin-Yoga, which is a very slowly paced yoga designed for restoration…I find I can actually slow my thinking down and hold a pose for 5 minutes and my spine and hips are stretched and internal organs re-centered. I am open to refreshed endeavors after a 75 minute session…
…and then nothing tops a massage for me…that sense of being safe and taken care of – fabulous.

Since having my bubba it has been hard and she didn’t travel well until recently. The last couple of weeks I have been taking her out to a few. She loves sitting in the pram people watching as she is pushed around, and I really like just wandering around.

I relax while working on my laptop by having a mellow show playing in the background like “survivorman” or something. Or sometimes I listen to music. But if I truly want to relax, it would be great to go sit by a lake or some type of water source. It’s relaxing sitting there listening to nature.

Hi Mandy,
Ok, I’m really late to the party on this one!
My favorite way to relax would also be hanging out at the beach but since I’m about a 3 day’s drive to the nearest ocean, I settle for a hike in the mountains. Being out in nature is the best. My husband calls it “filling up my tank”.
However, if I have limited time, I like to go to the local bookstore and browse. Just walking in and smelling coffee and books relaxes me.

Although I love them we have pretty boring bookstores here in the UK (sorry to anyone who thinks otherwise!). While in Oklahoma earlier this year I visited Borders, with its long couches to sit on while browsing, and a great coffee shop to enjoy examining my purchases in with sticky cake and lattes (note the plural there!) – you have to watch out for your new books as sticky fingers could ruin them before getting them home even!

I’m very fortunate in that I live in a beautiful part of the west of England called the Forest of Dean. Here, time has stood still, low crime, low drug problems, great schools . . . and the Forest.
Sometimes, if I want to get away from this computer, I can simply step into my garden, and on a warm evening, watch the family of deer who live in the woods adjoining our garden.
Oh yes, I’m very very lucky.
Sometimes, if the time is right, I may spot Gerald, his wives, and their 16 babies mooching around. Who’s Gerald?
There’s a photo of Gerald on my blog.
If you spot him, let me know.
Oh yes, don’t forget to read the tale of our midnight visitor.
