There are many options for free blogs online.  If you are new to blogging and want to try it without the financial outlay involved in hosting your own domain name a free blog online may be a good option for you.

A Google search for Free Blogs Online produces 1,600,000,000 results, so you have a good number of choices!  WordPress and Google’s own blogger are the two widest used platforms for free blogs online.

WordPress is highly regarded by everyone interested in search engine optimzation (SEO), but the blog creation template provided by blogger is one of the easiest to use, as it involves a simple ‘drag and drop’ design system.  As this is run by Google it integrates really well with Google’s Adsense programme, which is a bonus in terms of gaining revenue from your blog.

Eventually you may decide to create your own hosted domain, which will give you a great number of additional options, but until then a free blog online is a good option to choose.

    Hi.

It is always a good option to have your own blog, but many do worry about the cost, or whether they can do it themselves.

In the short term, using one of the hosted options you described could be a good in between stage. If you use WordPress.COM you can use it to get started, but should you wish to go to your own blog using the self hosted version of WordPress (at WordPress,ORG) you can get your blogs transferred over…. so maybe a better option for future proofing.

In light of what has happened TO Empower Network, and the blocking by FaceBook of that network, and linking to it, many maybe looking at hosting their own blogs in the future.

    Hi Mandy,

I think free blogs are a great way to learn more about blogging before you actually buy a domain and a host. I created many blogger blogs before I started my blog, that made me learn more about HTML and CSS which is helpful if you want to style your blog.
I thinks the best function for free blogs is to curate content, that’s what I use them for now.

No doubt WordPress is the #1platform for blogging and so far I’m loving it.
Great post Mandy, have a nice day.

    Hi Mandy,

Blogs have become a popular pass time for many of us. If we are not running our own blogs, we reading others blogs…kind of like me reading your blog site right now.

I think they are an important part of our world society. We can share ideas from others and we can gain ideas from all around the world to improve our options in life.

I’m running three blogs now and recently I changed the looks of two of my old sites jaylynne.com and ourgreenlifebiz.com and even changed the focus of my jaylynne.com site to lean more towards WordPress.

I have become an expert in building WordPress websites/blog and mentor my clients on how to get the most from their sites. I even Moderate Matt Wolfe’s WordPress Classroom helping his students with questions and problems that they have. My services are run out of Membership site called makingmoneyontheinter.net.

Hi Jay, I love WordPress but recognise that some people don’t want to commit to paying a fee to have a blog. Free blogs are an option for them and could be a spring board to a paid option later. I started with a free blogger blog.

      Enjoy the journey.

        Hi Mandy,

Free is always good. You can have a free WP site hosted by WordPress. But they restrict some options of themes and stuff. But if it is just a blog, you can get known, then over time move to your own space on a self hosting site such as D9Hosting.com. It is not difficult to move over as D9 can do that for you and help you along the way.
I know you know this, but it may help your readers. 😉

BTW I’m heading for Arkansas tomorrow morning (afternoon for you). I have a vehicle full of stuff as I do for every trip. Going to do some work on the dog house (AC/Heat) and an automatic dog door, insulation, etc.

We have a contract on our VA house to sell it. We’re waiting on the bank approval. Planning to be out there permanently in March, but being Lynneis working for the US Government and they are talking furloughs and such, we may be playing by ear. I can do that wih my music, but not so sure about life. lol.

        Take care,

        Jay

    Hey Mandy,

There are lots of other free blogging platforms as well, for example – wix, tumblr, weebly, typepad etc. Blogger and WordPress are most popular and I think everyone should use these platform before starting blog because we get a sense of widgets, tools and how everything works.

    Thanks 🙂

I think Tumblr is the best one out there. I love how the page can be edited so easily.

I have a free WordPress site that I use for personal blogging and a paid site for my business. My hosting with Site Ground for one website is less than 4$ a month. But if I needed to, it wouldn’t bother me to go for free on both of them.

Hi Lorette, thanks for visiting. I never really understood everyone’s problem with free sites. Although I know you can’t market on them as they don’t accept advertising, but apart from that they always worked well for me.

      Enjoy the journey!
