Having been interested in marketing information products via the internet for some time I have bought a large number of ebooks in the past.  One of the things I have found most disappointing about these documents is the amount of repetition, ‘packing out’, fluff and mumbo jumbo some people put into their product to make the document appear bigger than it actually is.  If you take all of that out you would still have a 20 page document of good quality information but the whole ‘packing out’ process detracts from the quality material contained within it.

I have just put out a first draft of my product to a few fellow students to comment on and have been encouraged by the feedback about the lack of ‘mumbo jumbo’ and ‘packing out’.  I simply don’t see the point of it.  Surely we are better to produce a quality document of a smaller size than to overwhelm our audience with an elephantine narrative that is simply repetitive and confusing.

So, quality or quantity?  For me, definately quality.  I’d rather have 20 pages of absolute gold content than 60 pages of fluff.  For James Garvin, definately quality, see his latest post here. For an example of a great post that is quality not quantity check this out here.

What do you want?

I have a product I was hoping to market via the masterclass.  It’s the reason I joined in the first place.  It isn’t going to bring me the success that is talked about so freely.  I then moved my thoughts towards another topic that I felt confident about, did quite a lot of research and writing and realised this wasn’t the great break through I had hoped for either.

So I have moved on to my third attempt.  I feel this time I have found the area I should direct my energy towards.  It has been a hard task getting there.  I would not have done it without the help of fellow masterclass students and their suggestions.  I also would not have found it without stumbling across a membership site that I signed up to last week.

So far in my posts I have avoided promoting sites you have to pay to access but I feel very differently about this one.  I have benefited greatly from it in choosing my first niche.  I have mentioned a few of the resources on the forum but dare not provide you all with all of the information for nothing – I think I’d get sued!

You may hate it, we all find our own favourites, but I’m going to give this one a real go.  The wealth of information on there is vast. You can give it a look here.  Best bit of all is that it comes with a money back guarantee.  So we really can’t lose.

Anyway, Ewen is full of interesting little tips and hints for online success – you wouldn’t expect anything else, I’m sure.  So, I am about to commit a sin in his eyes by telling you about the mistakes I’ve made.  Ewen believes and advocates in the book that you must always portray yourself positively and tell everyone you are the best.  He believes that if you say things like ‘I don’t really know alot about this but…’  people won’t be inclined to buy from you.  I’m not so sure I quite agree with that but hey, he is the millionaire and me, well, I’m still a really long way away from it!

So, every week on masterclass I have found myself making a mistake with something.  Whether it has been getting completely sidetracked by some other ‘great’ product out there or being unable to activate something on my website because I have uploaded the wrong sort of file…I can tell you know what I mean already!

This week it was sending out an e.mail to my subscribers via aweber.  A simple task, you might think.  I did manage it okay, the test arrived in my inbox and a fake subscription I set up also received the mail without any trouble.  Then I read it.  I had advised my subscribers that there was a new post on my blog – and I totally forgot to put a link in the e.mail!  Ho hum.  Well, I just hope the readers know who I am.  I did consider resending but I don’t really want to hassle people.

So all of you who have subscribed to this blog, I apologise!  I will remember to put a link in the next e.mail and that will direct you to this post, so you can read the last post I wrote at the same time!

This week is my Youth Work week.  I do 2 three hour sessions every fortnight.  I work with a group of young people who are grant givers.  They receive a large pot of money each year from the Government and distribute it to other young people by way of grants.  The applicants have to convince the grant giving panel that their cause is much more worthy than the others on the table in order to get the money.  I realise that as Internet Marketers we are constantly having to think of new ways to promote our goods to attract buyers and keep the cash coming in.  I have learnt alot from the young people I work with about promoting yourself and your ideas.  One of the biggest and most impressive lessons is that of self belief.  We must believe in ourselves to succeed.  We must believe in our ability to achieve our aims.

Take a hint from young people – Believe you can do it and you will do it!

In the mean time I have started to sell oil lamp spares on e.bay with great success.  They are mainly aimed at trade buyers as I sell in quantities, not singles.  I have only been listing them for 2 weeks and have been really pleased with the result.  I have tried selling items on e.bay before but had little or no success.  It’s a nice little side line.  I currently have 3 retail shops in 3 towns in Norfolk so I have storage space for quantities of items, which is lucky.  Bulk buying is so much more profitable, if you have the capital.  Prices are much lower and you can break the numbers down to sell on.  I can buy 1,000 oil lamp chimneys at once and then sell in boxes of 4 or 24 at a good mark up.  They are cheap for trade buyers who can’t buy 1,000 at a time, and are even good value for private customers.  It would be impractical to sell in singles though.  There are oil lamp sites that sell them singly.  They are twice the price I charge for 4!  So trade like me too!  The great part about this is I am getting positive feedback by the bucket load and building up my good reputation on e.bay.    You can check out my 3 shops here, the Fakenham shop, the Holt shop and the Wells shop.  Feel free to tell me what you think.
