Be A Light In This World

“Sometimes our light goes out, but is blown again into instant flame by an encounter with another human being.”
Albert Schweitzer

I have a great deal of respect for the writings of Albert Schweitzer.  I particularly love this simple quote as I believe we can all be that light in the world for others.  We often won’t even know we have had that much impact on the other person, instead just offering what we can at the time and leaving without recognising the value of what we have given.  At times we won’t even know we have given anything of any significance.

My last post, Smile – It Really Is Worth It, encouraged a lot of comments about the value of a simple smile, something given without any real thought, it is just a natural and spontaneous action, but it can make so much difference.  Holding the door open for someone shows we care, spending time for a word or a thank you to a server, someone who is doing their job, but it shows you recognise their effort.  These little things can have a real impact on another person’s life.

Every one of us has those dark times when our light goes out.  We don’t always share those feelings with others, especially not with strangers, but how often during those times has someone you do not know made the world of difference to your day and how you feel with their simple words or actions?

We can all be that light for others.

Enjoy the journey!

    Hi Mandy,

You are so right with this. Even with strangers; I used to be so backward and self-conscious that I wouldn’t say anything to anyone I didn’t know.

I am at the age now where I don’t care. I smile and say “Hi” to many that I meet as we walk past each other and sometimes I can see a look of surprise on their faces. That makes me happy because I think it made them happy too.

    Have a wonderful week.

Hi Monna, thanks for visiting. You are so right, the element of surprise, being nice when people aren’t expecting anything, it brings a natural reaction from them and drops something completely out of the blue and wonderful into their day.

      Enjoy the journey!

  • Hi Mandy ,
the trouble is that many people feel not good enough and think it is only them who have problems. Many pretend all is ok . But sometimes, you are right, a good word or a smile can make a big difference . I agree with Monna here, she is doing the right thing ,would the world not be more beautiful if we do this ?
Let us commit to at least smile and uplift others. It will come back 🙂
Thank you for the beautiful post

Hi Erika, thanks for visiting. We should all pledge to share our experiences of the ‘unexpected smile’ and the results we have had from it. Just seeing someone else’s face light up in surprise is a great moment.

    Hi Mandy,

One never knows what others are really feeling. Many of us hid our dark times so with that in mind, we need to have a mindset that is aware of others.

Oh that simple smile can be the candle in the dark.

My dog always lights up my life. He knows just how to do it!

Hi Donna, thanks for visiting. I was writing in the post that we need to be aware of others, but then thought it sounded a bit preachy so I took it out – how funny that you have said just that! My dog and my cat are brilliant at making me feel better, they are just so intuitive, aren’t they!

    Hi Mandy,

I completely agree with you that we can be the light for many can lighten up their life. We may not realise it most of the time but sometimes life give us an oppurtunity to experience this and it feels that great that we encourage and bring happiness in someone’s life, and it becomes even more enjoyable when this someone is a stranger to us.

What strange is that sometimes that lighten up our life are those suffering from even bigger problem but they never let these problems come on their face and keep fighting the battle of life with a smiling face.

Hi Bharat, thanks for visiting. That is so true about it often being people who are battling much more themselves. It seems to often give one a greater strength when we help someone else out or lighten their day.

    Hi Mandy,

Just love your minimalist approach to living!

Our true worth comes out by how we treat the people who ‘don’t matter’. Some people make me wonder how they act when no one’s around…

Oh snap! I meant ‘minimalist’! Must’a been some kinda brain association thing with some research I’d been doing.

Any chance you’d delete the original comment as it has zero bearing with my very positive impression of your free-wheeling, laissez-faire attitude that I find quite attractive?

Hi Sazia, thanks for visiting. I believe that if we all think about others and our responses to them, being clear to be gentle and caring, then the responses we get in turn will be of the same quality. Thanks for your very kind comment.

    Hi Mandy

You are so right and this is the essence of my blog. Each and everyone of us should be the light to the world.

Sometimes people are not aware how much they can make a difference when they lend a helping hand. They feel that they must do something so big to make a difference.

I have been in dark times but I have been motivated by people I have never even seen in person.

    Thanks for sharing. Take Care
