Back To Blogging Basics

I’ve had my blog since 2009 and started it off as a self help and motivation blog.  I loved everything about it from the theme and images to the content I was writing.  I had a massive following of readers who engaged with me through the comments section on a regular basis.  Indeed I wrote a short report about my journey and the amazing results I achieved in the first few months of blogging.  If you sign up to my list you will get a copy of that report in the first week.

Sometime after this I decided I wanted to monetise my blog.  This didn’t work for me at all in the self help niche.  I had made a complete success of my blog in terms of traffic and interaction and I wanted to share these tactics with others whilst maybe making an income from the blog itself.

So I changed my blog completely.  I turned it into a blog about blogging, changing the theme, the graphics and all the content.  Yes, you read that right, I changed my content.  This involved me taking all of my posts and comments off my blog and starting anew.  I realise now what a big mistake that was!  I should have left all of that on there and carried on with my new purpose.

I had felt at the time that my followers would not stick with me anyway when the focus changed so it didn’t matter.  What did matter is that I got rid of all of the wonderful comments that people had made, which I now regret deeply.

A lot of my content on the new focused blog was written to enable me to get a better rank.  I wrote with keywords and SEO in mind, and I don’t much like what I wrote now.  It’s not that the information was not valuable it just wasn’t my style.  And it didn’t actually earn me anything either!

So I went back to blogging basics, looked again at my own short report and read all those tips and tricks I had learned initially that had made my blog so very successful, and I implemented them.

Now I once again have a popular blog with good traffic, and I write without too much consideration about keywords and SEO, I just write naturally and it is much better for the reader.

And the monetisation?  Well, that will come, I know, little bits trickle in all the time and I am working on a new product in between blogging that will compliment the content on here.

Enjoy the journey!

    Hey Mandy,

I think we always get distracted with new way to earn money or get better at something. Unfortunately internet is flooded with such distraction and there are lot of things we need to learn and take care off to increase our blog visibility.

I think you have made a right choice by sticking with what you love and that’s what bringing your results. Keep up the good work 🙂

    Thanks,

Hi Yogsh, thanks for visiting. I agree, there is a great pull online for everyone to try and sell you something and if their sales pitch is good enough you are often persuaded to get on board. I have always been very interested in the self help niche and wrote exclusively about that. Although it was a topic that was close to my heart it did not develop into an online business so I changed tack and went into teaching blogging, because my blog was very successful. It still is but I now regret deleting all that earlier content, and in particular the comments, well over 1,000 unique comments. We live and learn.

      Enjoy the journey!

Sometimes Mandy we must start over… Blogging especially is a skill required over time, Although you can buy packages that start you off the right way much faster than just by doing it yourself i find these systems can cause problems as you are not in control. When your a website owner you need to have everything in hand.. I have a huge dislike for handing over power to someone else.

I have rebuilt my site maybe 4/5 times and I am sure I am not done yet…If you ever want to do a overhaul you can back up the database first and then add it back in once you have done some changes..Although I tend to start from scratch each time.. It’s all part of the learning curve.. We plough our hearts and souls into our sites, They become part of us don’t they?

Hi William, thanks for visiting. They do indeed become part of us which is why I am sad that I deleted the content and comments. At least I have a video of it all as I scrolled through each page with comments before deleting. I also did a back up but I think I lost it ages ago as it was a few years ago now when I changed over.

      Enjoy the journey!

Starting over is not as bad as giving up, at least we’re taking the small steps, otherwise we will not get without trying anything. Keep great work up.

  • Hi Mandy ,
hopefully, you did keep what you wrote that time and you can
use it again with new insights. I think it is good that now
many blogs have more than one category because we have more
than one interest. Writing what you love from the heart and be
yourself is the best thing to do.
Thank you for sharing your experience

Glad to see you found your way, Mandy.

The most important thing is to be true to yourself, blog about what you are passionate a out, and build strong relationships with people.

To monetize your blog, you must develop a deeper business plan and model your blog accordingly. Unfortunately, the majority of bloggers I’ve worked with have no idea how to do this, so they blog for months and years and never know how to monetize all their hard work. I’d suggest you get some good coaching to put yourself on the right track in that regard.

Good luck with your rediscovered blogging path.

I so appreciate hearing about your blogging journey, Mandy. It takes courage to turn things around and start over. It is a shame that you lost all of those comments, but you learned from it so it’s still part of the experience and now you know.

It will be interesting to watch the process unfold as you rebuild. You can tell that you are relaxed and comfortable with what you are doing now.

I predict that before long, you will have just as many comments and growth, and probably even more than last time.

    Keep fighting the fight!

Hi Deborah, thanks for visiting. I am lucky enough to have a video I took of the blog before I got rid of everything, so essentially I do have all of the content recorded, just not on here, which is a sadness, but my mistake – I won’t do it again, and I wrote about it so others would not do it either!

I think a person should enjoy his.her work. I am into bodybuilding and I feel that if you are not changing your life style and doing the natural things like doing it with heart, you can never transform your body.
Writing is in the same way. One should really not care about all the stuff way too much and like you said just try to write naturally. Cz we are writers are we love to write =)

Hi Andy, thanks for visiting. I think each of us has our own way of doing things, we can’t fit into a mould and all be the same. For example, I like to write really short posts, they seem to get a lot of attention and are popular, but all of the gurus say that posts should be long and in depth. So I do things my own way and it works for me.
